Do red light masks actually work?
Short answer: apparently yes. Here's how I understand it.
What's happening at the cellular level
Your skin contains fibroblast cells — the tradespeople of your skin, responsible for building and repairing the structures that keep it firm and plump. As we age, these cells slow down. They produce less collagen, less elastin, less of everything you want more of.
Red and near-infrared light is absorbed by these cells at specific wavelengths. The photons physically interact with cytochrome c oxidase, an enzyme in the mitochondria, essentially unblocking it. When that enzyme works properly, the cells produce more ATP — cellular energy. More energy means more collagen and elastin production.
The effect is real and documented. The debate is mostly about at-home devices and whether they deliver sufficient intensity to replicate the clinical results.
Wavelengths: what they do and how deep they go
Red light (around 630-660nm) works at the surface — good for improving skin texture, tone, and surface-level repair.
Near-infrared (around 810-850nm) penetrates deeper, up to 10mm into the dermis. This is where collagen and elastin are produced, and where the structural work happens.
Most masks worth considering use both. If a device only uses one wavelength, or doesn't specify, that's information.
The thing most people don't know: distance matters enormously
Power output is one variable. But how the light is delivered matters just as much. The intensity of light follows the inverse square law — double the distance, and you get a quarter of the intensity. Not half. A quarter.
This is why I'm sceptical of panel-style devices. The further the light source is from your face, the exponentially less effective it becomes. A well-designed mask that sits flush against your skin is going to outperform a panel you stand near, even if the panel has higher total wattage.
If you're going to spend the money (and these devices are not cheap) read the small print carefully. Look for the specific wavelengths, the power density (irradiance), and whether the device has clinical studies behind it rather than just marketing claims.
