Vitamin A comes in a few different forms, from gentle plant-based ones like beta-carotene and the naturally occurring tretinoin in rosehip oil, to the stronger, lab-made versions like retinol and prescription retinoic acid. The natural forms need to go through a few conversion steps in your skin before they become active, so they absorb slowly and in teeny amounts—making them safe to use while pregnant or breastfeeding. The synthetic ones, though, are super potent and absorb more directly into the bloodstream, which is why they’re not recommended during that time.
